What is a Class 5 Softswitch? The V1 VoIP Class 5 softswitch offers a carrier-grade platform for business and residential VoIP routing. It also provides other VoIP phone services including call waiting call, call transferring, call holding, and call forwarding. V1 VoIP’s class 5 softswitch is mostly intended for end users requiring local and long distance VoIP telephony services.

The V1 Class 5 softswitch platform is powered by PortaOne and is based on open interfaces and protocols. Any company can augment its revenues easily by offering services such as wholesale voice and SMS termination, calling card (phone-to-phone), callback, broadband phone calling: all made available through a class 5 softswitch.

The V1 VoIP Class 5 softswitch makes the following VoIP options possible:

Feature-rich Unified Communication/PBX system in the cloud for your enterprise customers.
Cutting edge retail services from Calling cards through Callback to Callshops.
Next generation residential telephony with VoIP Portal and Provisioning for devices
Mobile VoIP with Rich Communication Suite for smartphones and tablets.
Multilayered ownership structure to support your reseller/partner channels and networks of sales agents.

The Class 5 softswitch can deliver service to end users in a multitude of ways. The most direct method is to use IP phones or phones using IP adapters that connect directly with the softswitch. End users can also access VoIP services from a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet using a mobile dialer (or softphone). In effect, mobile dialer apps function as IP adapters for mobile devices, allowing these devices to interact with a Class 5 softswitch.

Class 5 Softswitches can also provide service to non-IP devices such as regular phones and cellphones. Examples of such service are PINless and Calling Card services. While IP phones connect directly to the softswitch and communicate with it through IP, the aforementioned solutions allow end users to dial into a local Class 5 softswitch, which can then provide them with VoIP services.

The V1 VoIP Class 5 switch primarily deals with subscription type telephone services and route calls through local areas. The V1 Class 5 softswitch allows residential VoIP service providers the ability to offer a wide variety of IP phone services to their customers. It is a complete solution that includes call routing, billing, DID assignment, auto-provisioning, e-commerce, and invoicing, all in one easy-to-use package. V1 VoIP also offers a Class 4 softswitch.

V1 VoIP Class 4 Softswitch Solutions

V1 VoIP offers a class 4 switch used by the US telephone company to interconnect local exchange carrier for long distance calls

The V1 VoIP Class 4 Softswitch
V1 VoIP provides a high performance Class 4 Softswitch for both carrier and enterprise markets. Our Class 4 Softswitch secures the delivery of VoIP traffic or services over multiple IP networks and includes full component redundancy. It is a highly scalable solution for small or large businesses looking to interconnect their VoIP servers. A class 4 switch is used mainly by large telco providers to interconnect to the worldwide telco networks. For VoIP providers, a Class 4 Softswitch can replicate what a class 4 switch does for land line telephone calls.

What is a Class 4 Switch?
A class 4 switch is a computer device used by the U.S. telephone company to interconnect local exchange carrier offices for long distance calls. More commonly known as a Tandem telephone switch, it connects class 5 switches to a larger network. It is a telephone central office switch used to connect the end offices of telephone service networks together. Class 4 switches can only deal with high-speed digital four-wire connections.

Types of Class 4 Switches
There are two types of connection for a class 4 switch. One is called a sector, or local tandem which is used to interconnect to the traffic between class 5 switches within a local access and transport area (LATA). For example, a call is placed from Seattle to Boston. The calls travels through the class 5 switches and find out that it cannot access the Boston phone number through that network. It then connects to a class 4 switch which allows it to connect to another class 4 switch in Boston. It then again connects to a class 5 switch in the local area the phone number is located to complete the call.

Another type of connection for a class 4 switch is called an access tandem switch. This is when a class 4 switch connects to a long-distance telephone company, also known as an Interexchange carrier (IXCs). Much like a local tandem, the same process is repeated but the call travels overseas through the point of presence (PoP) provided by an IXC. It then gains access to the class 4 switches in other countries and can interconnect to the one it needs to reach.

Benefits of a Class 4 Softswitch:
1. Intelligent Call Routing – Uses sophisticated algorithms to reduce cost, latency, congestion, and improve the overall quality of VoIP calls
2. Easy to use User Interface – Provides a simple user interface for local or remote control management of maintenance, configuration, monitoring resources, software updates, firewall management, etc. Choose between a web based GUI or a command line interface
3. Billing Interface – Overview of services provided including Call Data Records (CDRs)
4. External Routing APIs – Fully control routing through the use of applications with an integrated SVI in the existing infrastructure
5. Security Features – Integrated Firewall, password and user name protection, secure external protocols, and reports of any unauthorized access

V1 VoIP Wholesale Traffic Hosted Class 4 Softswitch

V1 VoIP wholesale transit voip traffic offered with hosted softswitch

At the end of the day, VoIP is all about traffic and how that voice traffic is exchanged. If you were to make a routing list of how traffic is received, it would look like this:

customer (the one that makes the calls) → local VoIP service provider →
VoIP traffic transit company (or a whole network of them) → VoIP termination provider → PSTN network

Transit traffic exchange companies may be considered the transporting medium of VoIP. This setup usually includes a switch, billing server, support for H.323 and SIP protocols and contracts with several origination / termination partners. As such, this is mostly a Class 4 featured type of business, based on post-paid operations.

For operators looking for a Class 4 hosted softswitch, V1 VoIP offers the following options:

* Dynamic routing with profitability and capacity control, to you maximize your business incomes
